Distribution Issues

The purpose of the workshop is to investigate the potential impact of the Smart Grid at the distribution system level and identify policies that the Commission should consider. How can a movement toward a “smarter” distribution system support existing energy policies? How can the Smart Grid help to integrate distributed energy resources, including generation and storage, into the distribution system? How can the Smart Grid improve monitoring in the distribution system? How can the Smart Grid increase the efficiency of the distribution system? What cyber-security measures should be taken to protect the utility’s systems and facilities from intruders? What metrics should be used to quantify success in moving toward a smarter electricity distribution system?

Each section will begin with brief presentations by stakeholders or experts. The presentations will be followed by discussion moderated by Commission staff.

3. Panel 1
Within the distribution system, how can the Smart Grid promote the adoption and maximize the benefits of increased penetration of distributed energy resources, including distributed generation (solar, wind, etc) and energy storage? How can the Smart Grid facilitate the integration of demand response?

How can the Smart Grid increase the reliability and efficiency of the distribution system, for example, by improving situational awareness, achieving greater automation and incenting self healing, and improving asset utilization? How do we protect the grid’s distribution system with cyber-security from attacks from intruders or terrorists?
