CPUC Workshop - June 26, 2009 - Smart Grid (R.08-12-009)
1. This workshop will focus on Smart Grid issues that arise at the transmission level. This workshop will address
transmission issues related to Smart Grid such as situational awareness, cyber security, renewables integration, and
the impact of a smart distribution grid. Each section of the agenda will begin with a brief five minute presentation by each panel member. The presentations will be followed by discussion moderated by Commission staff.
2. Welcome and Opening Comments – Commissioner Rachelle Chong and A.L.J. Tim Sullivan

3. The Smart Transmission Grid
What is “wide-area situational awareness” and why is it important?
How can Smart Grid increase the efficiency of the transmission grid (i.e. improve asset utilization)
How can concepts such as Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) and dynamic ratings help?
How can Smart Grid help maintain a reliable grid given the challenges the grid will be facing?
What cyber security challenges does the transmission grid face? How can Smart Grid help address
these challenges?
What metrics would be suitable for measuring progress made by Smart Grid toward a more efficient
and reliable transmission grid?
